Thoughtful Thursday

“It is nice to have valid competition; it pushes you to do better.”

~ Gianni Versace

Competition has the power to bring out the best in us, but only when we allow it to inspire rather than intimidate us.

Valid competition is not about hoping someone else fails so that we can succeed. It is about recognizing excellence, respecting the work behind it, and allowing it to challenge us to raise our own standards. The strongest competitors are often the ones who show us what is possible.

In education, leadership, athletics, and life, it can be easy to compare ourselves to others and wonder whether we measure up. But comparison does not have to diminish us. Someone else’s success can become evidence that growth is possible. Their discipline can encourage ours. Their creativity can stretch our thinking. Their achievement can remind us that we still have another level to reach.

Healthy competition requires confidence and humility. Confidence allows us to believe we belong in the room. Humility allows us to learn from the people standing beside us.

The goal is not to become someone else. The goal is to let the excellence around us push us toward a stronger, more focused, and more capable version of ourselves.

Consider the people who challenge you to do better. Recognize the role they may be playing in your growth. Sometimes the person pushing you the hardest is also helping you discover just how much more you can become.
