Thoughtful Thursday

“I know who I am, I know what I can and can’t do, and I know what I will and won’t do.”

~Dolly Parton

There is a lot of confidence packed into this one sentence.

Not the kind of confidence that says, I can do everything.

The kind that comes from knowing yourself well enough to understand your strengths, your limits, your values, and your boundaries.

That matters in education.

It matters for teachers who are constantly being asked to take on one more thing.

It matters for leaders who have to decide what deserves their attention and what does not.

It matters for students who are still figuring out who they are while navigating expectations from adults, peers, school, family, and the world around them.

Self-awareness is not about closing doors on yourself. It is about knowing which doors are worth opening.

Sometimes growth means stretching beyond what you thought you could do.

Sometimes growth means recognizing that something is not yours to carry.

Sometimes courage looks like saying yes.

Sometimes it looks like saying no.

The real work is learning the difference.

Dolly’s words also remind us that identity and boundaries are connected. When you know what you value, decisions become clearer. When you understand your strengths, you can use them more intentionally. When you recognize your limits, you can ask for help, build partnerships, or choose a different path without seeing that as failure.

That kind of clarity can protect both your energy and your purpose.

So this Thursday, consider:

Who are you becoming?

What do you know you do well?

Where are you still growing?

What are you willing to take on?

What are you no longer willing to carry?

There is strength in knowing yourself well enough to answer those questions.

There is even more strength in living accordingly.
