The Last Four Minutes
We all have routines. Some are obvious, while others quietly become part of who we are without us even realizing it.
For years, mine was simple.
During the last four minutes of my drive to work each morning, I would make sure Have It All by Jason Mraz was playing. It became much more than a song. It became my transition.
Those final moments allowed me to leave behind whatever I was carrying from home, mentally prepare for the day ahead, and remind myself of the kind of leader I wanted to be. No matter what was waiting on the other side of the parking lot, I walked through those doors with a little more optimism, a little more gratitude, and a renewed commitment to choose positivity.
I realize it wasn't really about the music. It was about creating space to intentionally shift my mindset.
Life moves fast. We rush from one responsibility to the next, often carrying the stress of the last task into the next one. Without realizing it, those moments begin to define our days.
Whether it's a favorite song, a quiet walk, a cup of coffee before everyone else wakes up, or simply taking a deep breath before opening the next door, our routines have the power to ground us. They remind us that while we can't always control what the day brings, we can often control how we choose to enter it.
I still think about those last four minutes.
They did not solve every problem. They did remind me that mindset isn't something you stumble upon. It's something you choose, one small habit at a time.
