Seasons Shift, Leaders Adapt
As the leaves start to change, they don’t force it. They respond to the season. Leadership is like that. Instead of clinging to “summer thinking,” we honor the signals around us: new data, shifting needs, fresh voices. Trees let go to conserve energy and grow stronger; leaders let go of outdated practices to make room for what students, families, and staff need now.
Try this mini-practice today: pause for one quiet minute before your first meeting. Ask yourself, “What am I holding onto that’s no longer serving our community?” Name one small thing you can release and one small practice you’ll adopt in its place. Consider:
What “green leaves” should stay because they’re still healthy?
Which “golden leaves” deserve celebration before we let them go?
Where is the canopy too dense? who’s not getting enough light (voice, access, time)?
Action step: pick one routine to sunset this week (an unnecessary report, a duplicative meeting segment) and reinvest that time in a brief family or student touchpoint.
Reminder: change is not a verdict on the past; it’s a commitment to the future. Lead like a tree; rooted, responsive, and ready to grow.
