Becoming Heart Ready

Summer in education is a break and a bridge. A quiet, necessary pause between the final bell and the next chapter. The school year is built on calendars, targets, and to-do lists; summer invites restoration. Reflection. The rare chance to become heart ready for what’s next.
What Does It Mean to Be “Heart-Ready”?
Being heart ready means approaching the new school year not just with sharpened pencils and fresh plans, but with an open, energized, and grounded sense of purpose. It’s the difference between showing up prepared and showing up present. It’s the foundation for meaningful connection, authentic leadership, and intentional action.
When you’re heart-ready:
You lead with clarity.
You listen with empathy.
You create space for others because you’ve made space for yourself.
Questions to Reflect On This Summer
Let this season be a mirror and a map. Here are questions to ask yourself as you recharge:
What part of me needs rest the most: my mind, my body, or my spirit?
What boundaries do I want to protect better this year?
When was the last time I felt truly aligned in my work? What contributed to that feeling?
Who do I want to be for my students, colleagues, and community this year?
What did I learn about myself this past year that I want to carry forward or leave behind?
Ways to Recharge with Purpose
This isn’t just about self-care bubble baths (though those are valid!). Being heart-ready blends self-care with self-direction. Try these soul-nourishing, goal-oriented practices:
Create a Personal Compass Statement
Write a sentence or two that captures why you do this work. Revisit it each week during the school year.
Design a Rhythm, Not a Routine
Instead of rigid schedules, build in flexible rhythms (morning walks, afternoon quiet time, digital detox hours) that help you reset and recenter.
Set “Soul Goals”
Set goals centered on presence, relationships, and values. Examples:
“I will lead three meetings this fall where everyone’s voice is heard.”
“I will check in personally with a new colleague each week.”
Invest in Learning That Inspires You
Read something that reignites your passion, not because you have to, but because you want to.
Reconnect With Your “Why” People
Schedule lunch, coffee, or a call with those who remind you why this work matters, your personal and professional cheerleaders.
Start From Within
The school year will bring its share of deadlines, demands, and distractions. There will be emails to answer, initiatives to launch, and moments when your energy is stretched to the limit. Summer offers something precious: the rare opportunity to pause, to notice, and to do the invisible, invaluable work of tending to your heart.
This is the season to refill what has been poured out. To slow down long enough to hear your own thoughts. To shift from reactive to reflective. The most effective educators and leaders are operationally prepared and emotionally aligned.
Before setting your goals, establish your foundation.
Before you lead others, listen inward.
Before you give, fill up.
Revisit what matters most to you; who you want to be in the doing. What brings you joy? What drains your spirit? What anchors you when things get hard?
Use this time not to plan every detail, but to strengthen your center.
This summer, be kind to yourself. Be curious about what you need. Protect your peace. Nourish your energy. Reconnect with your purpose. When the first bell rings again, arrive with plans, protocols, and presence.
Come back heart-ready for the work that awaits. When your heart is full, your impact is immeasurable.
